Ian and Anya Mitchell are producers of Mitchells Mountain Beef. They operate a third generation family ranch forty miles north of Kamloops, B.C. They are committed to raising quality beef and since 1970, initiated by Ian’s father, Bob, they have been selectively breeding Simmental and Angus into their original commercial Hereford herd. Their calves have been sold hormone and anti-biotic free since 1987, well ahead of their time.
The herd winters in the north Thompson Valley and in the summer ranges up to 7,000 feet elevation in mountain pasture. Calves are raised without hormones, steroids or antibiotics and the grass they feed on is free of pesticides and chemical fertilisers. Cows are, in effect, solar powered ruminants, transforming natural, wild grasses, legumes and other herbaceous plants into energy for growth. Their manure drops onto the land, becoming nutrients for the next cycle of plants. The herd is free to roam through the lush, pristine mountain pastures with their calves, returning to the ranch at the valley bottom in the fall. Ian and Anya take pride in their stewardship of their land and water resources, in the animals they raise and in the quality, flavour and health benefits of the resulting beef. |
