Dominion Creek Ranch

Betty Peters

Ranching has been a way of life for the Peters’ family for the past 100 years.  Norman and Betty, with son Leroy and his wife, Bernadine, and their children, Jessica and John, own and operate a ranch located in the valley 10 km from Sun Peaks Ski Resort on Tod Mountain, where they raise top quality grass fed beef, lamb and pigs.

In the summer, their Black Angus/ Shorthorn cattle graze on the mountains around Sun Peaks returning to winter in the valley bottom, which helps return nutrients to the soil.  The sheep and pigs remain on fields near the ranch buildings year round with guardian dogs on duty to keep predators away.

The Peters raise all their animals as antibiotic free and without added growth hormones.  They have completed the British Columbia Environmental Farm Plan, the Verified Beef Production Program and the Canadian On-Farm Food Safe Program for sheep.  They are also members of the BC Cattlemen’s Association, the B.C. Sheep Breeders Association, the B.C. Livestock Producers
Co-operative Association and the Yellowhead 4-H Club.

Betty is a board member of Heartland Foods and Farm Tours Co-operative, representing Dominion Creek Ranch as an inaugural member in the
co-operative’s mission to create a culture in which local sustainable agriculture is a thriving part of the local economy.  As she points out, historically, a country that does not support its agricultural base, loses strength and vibrancy.
